Over the last year my work has evolved to challenge functionality; reinventing forms of furniture to encourage a new perspective and experience for the viewer. Provoking questions such as; Are there any limits to what society classes as Fine Art? And are there any boundaries to combining design?

Catherine Bertola’s work is an attempt to look beyond the surface of objects and buildings, to uncover forgotten and invisible histories of places and people, as a way of reframing and considering the past.

Jodie Rice:

Whilst Researching for my dissertation I came accross artist Catherine Bertola in Contemporary Art, From Studio to Situation by Claire Doherty, it documents the artist along with 17 others collaboratively work together to create the exhibition Further Up in the Air.

‘In a text written for Carnegie International Jean Fisher writes; “If artistic practices have a role here, it is to unpick the languages of habitual discourse, to prevent us with new ways of seeing, other stories that offer different insights into the experiences of the world, so that we can begin again the task of remaking it.”

I felt this quotation revealed exactly what I was encountering whilst painting and decorating with my Grandad over the summer….. pealing back the memories and recreating a new experience to look forward to, giving my Grandad the fresh start to life with the home beign a direct portrayal of everyday life.

Over the Summer Holidays I helped my Grandad to strip wallpaper...

Over the Summer Holidays I helped my Grandad to strip wallpaper and paint the drab and dull walls of his home…. Pealing back the dated dull wallpaper had a therapeutic being in that it would not only get my Grandad physically motivated after a harsh few months of dealing with cancer and sadly losing my Nan but also gave him the feeling of a new start. The act of decorating became part of my way of helping Grandad to embrace life and although I didn’t want him to move on exactly I instead felt it might get him to look and plan for the future, to look for positive change.
Looking back I’ve realised the wall paper itself had become like a layer of time passing, possible a shedding of memories in which my Grandad took to reveal a new experience and perspective. I started to think about my art practice in relation as I often work with household everyday objects in which become symbols to my own personal feelings and perspectives of the world. Could wallpaper be a metaphorical portrayal of one’s identity? Could I manipulate its original portrayal and reinvent a new perspective for it through my art……..

Visit to The Tate Gallery

Yayoi Kusama 9th February-5th June 2012
